Pennsylvania's radon problem

DEP says Pennsylvania has one of the most serious radon problems in the country, with an estimated 40% of homes tested above the EPA action level of 4 pCi/L.1 The Allegheny County Health Department says no amount of radon is safe, and that if testing confirms radon a reduction system should be considered. It recommends a certified mitigation contractor, because doing the job improperly may make the problem worse or create other issues.2

Certified by DEP, with a photo ID

Pennsylvania law requires every third party who performs radon testing, mitigation or lab analysis to be certified by DEP.3 Before any work, a mitigator must give you a written estimate, evidence of certification and a printed notice that only DEP-certified people may provide these services. They must also show their DEP photo ID card on request.4 DEP's consumer guide says each certified mitigator's photo ID badge shows a certification number and expiration date.5

Doing it yourself? Homeowners and occupants can legally lower radon in their own home without certification.3 DEP still recommends testing again after any fix, and the county warns that a bad install can make things worse.32

What Pennsylvania requires of every install

Pennsylvania's mitigation standard for homes three stories or less (25 Pa. Code § 240.308) spells out several things a homeowner can check:6

Mitigators must also give you any warranty and instructions for checking and servicing the equipment in writing.4

The systems Pittsburgh-area pros install

Among the 3,801 Allegheny County systems with a reported cost in that period, DEP's records show:7

System typeInstalls
Sub-slab ventilation3,093
Activating a passive system323
Modifying an existing system246
Sub-membrane depressurization (crawl spaces)137

Sub-slab systems dominate because most local homes have basements. Prices for each type are on our Pittsburgh cost guide.

Keep it working

DEP says most soil-suction systems include a monitor that shows whether the system is running. It recommends retesting after the fix and then about every two years.3

Areas we serve

We match homeowners across the Pittsburgh area, including these communities and ZIP codes:

ZIP codes are 2020 Census ZIP Code Tabulation Areas, which closely approximate USPS ZIP codes. We list ZIPs that make up a substantial share of each community, so edge ZIPs that barely touch a town are left out, and some ZIPs span two towns.8 Not on the list? Common questions

Does a radon mitigator need to be certified in Pennsylvania?

Yes. Pennsylvania law requires all third parties who perform radon testing, mitigation or lab analysis to be certified by DEP. Homeowners may work on their own homes without certification.

How can I verify a Pittsburgh radon contractor?

Ask to see the DEP-issued photo ID, which shows the certification number and expiration date. Mitigators must show it on request and give you a written estimate plus a notice about certification.

What has to be on my radon system after install?

Pennsylvania's standard requires a label with the certified individual's or firm's name, certification number and contact number, plus an information package marked "Radon Mitigation Information" attached to the system.

Do radon systems in Allegheny County actually work?

In PA DEP's records for Allegheny County systems installed from January 2024 through July 2026, 94.5% of reported post-mitigation tests were under 4 pCi/L and 83.6% were under 2 pCi/L.

Can I install a radon system myself in Pennsylvania?

Homeowners and occupants may lower radon in their own home without certification. The Allegheny County Health Department recommends a certified contractor, because an improper job can make the problem worse.

How often should I retest after mitigation?

PA DEP recommends testing after the system is installed and then about every two years.
