Radon Mitigation Cost in Pittsburgh
Most cost guides quote national guesses. Pennsylvania's DEP records the reported cost of every certified install, so we pulled the real numbers for Allegheny County.
Real Allegheny County median
$1,350
That's the median reported cost of 3,801 radon systems installed in Allegheny County from January 2024 through July 2026. The middle half cost $1,195 to $1,450.1
Cost by system type
| System | Median | Middle half |
|---|---|---|
| Sub-slab ventilation (most basements) · 3,093 installs | $1,395 | $1,276–$1,450 |
| Crawl space sub-membrane · 137 installs | $2,150 | $1,588–$2,800 |
| Activate a passive system · 323 installs | $700 | $650–$800 |
| Modify an existing system · 246 installs | $450 | $450–$500 |
"Middle half" means the 25th to 75th percentile. Across all 3,801 systems, 80% cost between $700 and $1,599. Source: our summary of PA DEP data on data.pa.gov.1
Cost by house style (all system types)
| House style | Installs | Median |
|---|---|---|
| Two-story | 1,695 | $1,331 |
| Three-story | 1,421 | $1,400 |
| Ranch | 362 | $1,395 |
| Cape Cod | 132 | $1,395 |
| Split level | 110 | $1,395 |
House style barely moves the median. What changes the price is the type of system: a crawl space costs noticeably more, and an existing pipe costs much less.1
Why older Pennsylvania figures look cheaper
DEP's own consumer booklets still say fixing a home generally costs $500 to $2,000, with an average of about $1,000.23 Those booklets are older. The installs DEP recorded in Allegheny County since 2024 have a median of $1,350, so budget from the recent numbers, not the booklet.1

Pennsylvania rules protect you before you sign:4
- A written estimate. For mitigators, it serves as the required price list.
- Proof of DEP certification, and a DEP photo ID shown on request.
- A printed notice that only DEP-certified people may provide radon services in Pennsylvania.
- Warranty and service information in writing, if a warranty is offered.
DEP's consumer guide also says certified contractors must follow the state's mitigation standards in 25 Pa. Code § 240.308.2
Reading a Pittsburgh bid
- Well above $1,450 for a basement? That's above the middle half of local sub-slab installs. Ask what's different about your house, such as a crawl space, a second suction point or interior routing.
- Far below $1,195? Ask whether it's a full new system or an activation or modification. Those are legitimately cheaper.
- Unsealed perimeter drain? Pennsylvania requires written notice that it may raise heating and cooling costs.5
Selling with a radon result on file
DEP says that if your home has been tested, the results must be disclosed when the home is sold. Its advice is to test, save the results, and fix a problem before listing so it doesn't complicate the sale.3 The county also says a test at the level of concern must always be disclosed to future owners.6
How we got these numbers
We downloaded PA DEP's "Radon Mitigation System Year 1987 – Current" dataset from data.pa.gov (updated July 13, 2026) and filtered it to Allegheny County systems installed in 2024, 2025 and 2026 (through July). We counted each system once and excluded two records with no cost. Costs are as reported to DEP by certified mitigators and aren't adjusted for inflation.1
