Why so many Omaha basements need a system

The state health department reports that more than half of Nebraska radon tests exceed 4.0 pCi/L, and it calls radon the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers.1 Nebraska Public Media reported in 2025 that 53 Nebraska counties have average radon levels above 4 pCi/L.2 EPA places Douglas and Sarpy counties in Zone 1, its highest-potential category.3

How Nebraska licenses radon work

Under Neb. Rev. Stat. § 71-3507, DHHS must license people who provide radon measurement and mitigation services.4 The state's rule, 180 NAC 11, creates four license types: measurement specialist, measurement business, mitigation specialist and mitigation business. It says no person may provide radon measurement or mitigation services in Nebraska without the matching license.5

The company

Mitigation business

The firm itself holds a DHHS business license, separate from its workers' individual licenses.5

The installer

Mitigation specialist

Requires department-approved training within four years, a passed exam, and two years of relevant education or work experience.6

Testing

Measurement specialist

A separate license for the person who tests. Ask who will run your post-install test.6

DHHS publishes current lists of licensed radon mitigation businesses and licensed measurement businesses on its radon page, so you can look a company up before you sign.1

Owning a rental doesn't make you exempt. DHHS says owning a property doesn't exempt the owner from licensing requirements. Its self-testing allowance covers the home you live in.7

What an Omaha bid should spell out

EPA's consumer guide recommends getting these in the written proposal:8

Homes built since 2019

Nebraska's radon-resistant new construction law took effect September 1, 2019. DHHS summarizes it as requiring a passive sub-slab system in new homes: a gas-tight vent pipe, a soil-gas barrier, a sealed sump lid where there is one, and an electrical outlet for a future fan. Some projects are exempt.9 If your house is that new, an installer may only need to add a fan, so ask before paying for a full system.

After the fan is running

National Radon Program Services advises retesting between 24 hours and 30 days after a system starts, preferably by an independent tester, and then at least every two years.10

Council Bluffs and Carter Lake

Across the Missouri River, Iowa's credentialing rule applies instead. Iowa Administrative Code 641—44.3 covers radon mitigation credentials, so ask an Iowa installer for their Iowa HHS credential rather than a Nebraska license.11

Areas we serve

We match homeowners across the Omaha area, including these communities and ZIP codes:

ZIP codes are 2020 Census ZIP Code Tabulation Areas, which closely approximate USPS ZIP codes. We list ZIPs that make up a substantial share of each community, so edge ZIPs that barely touch a town are left out, and some ZIPs span two towns.12 Not on the list? Send the form anyway, and we'll tell you if we can help.

Common questions

Does a radon mitigation company need a license in Nebraska?

Yes. Neb. Rev. Stat. § 71-3507 requires DHHS licensure for radon measurement and mitigation services, and 180 NAC 11 has separate licenses for mitigation specialists and mitigation businesses.

How do I check an Omaha radon contractor's license?

Nebraska DHHS posts lists of licensed radon mitigation businesses and licensed measurement businesses on its Radon page.

What training does a Nebraska mitigation specialist need?

DHHS requires approved training within four years of applying, a passed exam, and two years of relevant post-secondary education or work experience.

My Omaha home was built in 2021. Does it already have a radon pipe?

Probably a passive one. Nebraska's radon-resistant new construction law has applied since September 1, 2019, though some projects are exempt. Ask a licensed mitigator whether adding a fan is enough.

Who regulates radon contractors in Council Bluffs?

Iowa, not Nebraska. Iowa's mitigation credential rule is in Iowa Administrative Code 641—44.3.

Please note: Nebraska requires a DHHS license to provide radon measurement or mitigation services. This page is general information summarized from public agencies, not professional advice or a radon service. For a plan for your home, talk with a DHHS-licensed radon professional.
